The World Food Crisis: Agriculture for Peacebuilding
Hunger has returned as a primary issue on today’s global agenda. The shared nature of agricultural conditions and challenges throughout the Middle East region demands cross-border research and cooperation to enhance crop management practices, environmental protection, and water quality. How can actors within the Middle East region work together to cope with food shortages; and how best can the international community promote cooperative measures through foreign aid and investment in the region.

This panel will open with a short ceremony honoring the steadfast commitment of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to the Peres Center’s “Twinned Peace Basketball Schools” program for Palestinian and Israeli girls.
Sport has an unparalleled ability to overcome barriers of language, politics and religion, and as such, is a powerful tool in the modern day challenge of peacebuilding. This panel will explore ways in which sport contributes to the social and cognitive development of children and youth, brings people together from both sides of the conflict divide, and instills values of teamwork and common goals.

This session is dedicated to the memory of the late Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin
Peacebuilding must be a comprehensive process. State leaders may facilitate peace and serve as major players in the process of peacebuilding, however, to truly lay the foundations for peaceful relations, the citizens must also be willing and able participants in this process. This concluding session will address the complex issue of developing a participatory, inclusive and sustainable Middle East peace. The panel will be followed by a “question/answer” segment between the veteran panelists and emerging Palestinian and Israeli figures from the Peres Center's “Young Political Leaders” program.
